Heat and Power Issues in Data Centers

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

One of the biggest power-consumption issues in data centers is cooling all those servers.  There are a couple of ways to address this cooling issue.  Consolidating the servers you have, can reduce the number of boxes running at all, and this will immediately address the cost of powering the data center as well as addressing the cost to lower the temperature in the center.  Along with consolidation comes questions of how well the servers will run when they are running either virtual machines (a common way to consolidate while maintaining much of the security of having physical separation between resources) or policy-separated access to sensitive files using group-access policies. Atlanta SecureWorldExpo Again

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The Atlanta SecureWorldExpo was really fun this year! I had a chance to catch up with some old friends and meet some great new people.
There was a snafu with the program, and my session was not on the paper schedule, though it was on the web site, so I was pleased to see anybody at all show up for my session on “Penetration Tools You Should Know.”

I figure the people who were planning to come to my talk should have even more benefit so I did a drawing for a signed copy of my book, Computer Security and Penetration Tools.  Jason Miller of ChoicePoint walked away with the prize.

I am looking for stories about insider threat right now, for a project to be finished later this year.  If you have one, let me know by email or add a comment to this post.  Since Insider Threats are the most prevalent of successful attacks on businesses today, I have been drilling down into the situations that make it possible and the many solutions available.

Computer Security Habits

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

This is ME! Wolf Halton

Just a quick idea.

Computer security is a habit.  There are a few things that need to be done consistently, and they are not difficult.  They are also not expensive.

  • # Use a password on your computer.  These days, the threats you let in on your computer might be just bad habits your friends have.  You probably don’t distribute your car keys to all the people who come over to a party at your house, and you probably don’t want to allow anybody who comes over access to your personal stuff.  It’s none of their business.  The government has approved the airport search team to look at the content of your computer, if you are going on international flights.  This has obvious security and privacy issues, and if you have sensitive business files on your laptop or your home computer, you want them behind a password.  Unexpected users on your home machine might not be as careful as you are and you might collect spyware and worms from them going to unsafe sites. Don’t Engage in “Actionable” Engineering Plans

Marketing-speak 101 Word for the day: Actionable

Defining IT’s Role in Actionable Sales Planning

This is an actual title I received from one of the white-paper producers to which I am subscribed. By reading into the various articles it is plain that they believe this word “Actionable” has something to do with being active or producing an effect. It doesn’t mean that at all. (more…)

Get A Blogging Course

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Well, with all this spare time surrounding the Christmas Season, I thought I would look into ways that you or I could get useful traffic to a blogging web site. I bought the source codes from Mark Joyner’s last, extremely successful, web business Aesop.com and found it very interesting and useful. I have used variations of his code on various pages since I got it in 2003. So Far I have made no real attempt to take over the blogosphere, but now Mark has put out a beta version of a blogging course from his Simpleology site. (more…)

Possible Solution for Captives of MS Publisher

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pubooo is an extension of OpenOffice.org that may give release to people who have a lot of material in the proprietary and un-convertible Publisher format.

When I was converting to Linux and OpenOffice.org, all my .pub files had to be recreated or replaced by hand. This solution might be far easier.

New OpenOffice.org Support Forum Open for Business

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Wolf Halton

In March of this year, a small band of adventurers put together the idea of an independent support forum for English-speakers that was truly free, even free of possible loss of key people (including our gallant adventurers). The progress of this adventure was steady and marked by all sorts of drama and heartrending happenstance. (more…)

Which Auto-Responder Do You Use?

Friday, August 31st, 2007

This is ME, Wolf Halton!

Everybody knows that auto-responders are great tools. Auto-responders are those great scripts that can send an immediate email back when somebody sends you one, even if you are out of the office and will be away from your email. For Internet marketers, auto-responders are used to send out newsletters, email courses or info follow-ups when an interested person fills out the contact form. (more…)

OpenOffice.org Templates

Friday, August 31st, 2007

This is ME, Wolf Halton!

I was thinking about putting up some templates that I use in and around the office

We used to be a Windows shop and I had marketing materials developed on MS Publisher for our reps. I am now mostly a Linux shop. My work computer is running Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) and my Office Suite of choice is OpenOffice.

MS Publisher format is closed-source and there is nothing that can read Publisher files except for Publisher. This means that I have to find alternate routes, so I have started developing templates for my must-haves based on OpenOffice.org

You can download OpenOffice.org from http://openoffice.org free of charge or obligation and load it on as many machines as you want. There is an OpenOffice download for Windows, Mac and Linux

To make your life easier, I will make the templates available in OpenDocument Format (Native to OpenOffice.org) and in MS Formats (Native to MS Office)

If you have requests let me know and I will prepare what I can for you. If you have OpenOffice.org Files that could be used as templates, send them to me and I will put them on the site. Look for the templates under the link in the top right side of the page
